Engineering and Programming Portfolio

Hi There!

My name is Priya Shah.

I'm a 3rd Year Mechanical Engineering student studying at UCLA. Currently, I’m conducting research on using soft robotics to create a biomimetic structure to help preserve coral reefs. I’m also interested in robotics, autonomous systems, and product engineering. Outside of engineering, I’ve developed skills in coding focusing on website and app development.

Projects

  • CoralBot

CoralBot is the research project I am co-founded and am currently working on at UCLA, under Professor Jawed’s at UCLA’s Structures-Computer Interaction Lab. This research is working on creating a biomimetic soft-robot in order to create a structure that can autonomously plant coral reef substrates onto artificial reefs.

Currently, we are in the preliminary research and design stages, engaging in a lot of literature review and initial prototyping.

  • Model Rockets

During my first year at UCLA, I worked on building a model rocket within 9 weeks. This project involved using SolidWorks and OpenRocket, as well as building skills on various other rapid prototyping and manufacturing techniques.

  • Grounded App

Grounded was an application that I helped develop as part of a Creative Labs project I joined during my freshmen year. I worked as a front-end developer for this application, and developed my skills in using Figma, React Native, JavaScript, GitHub, and Firebase. The app was an initial prototype created over 8 weeks.

  • Autonomous Rovers

During my first year at UCLA, I worked in a team to build this autonomous rover named “Andre” over the course of 9 weeks. This project was one of the first engineering projects I ever worked on, and is what gave me an introduction to rapid prototyping, CAD, and electronics.

  • Fabrication and Design Essentials

Fabrication and Design Essentials (or FADE) is one of the clubs at UCLA I’ve been active in, and am currently the project lead of. This club teaches students the fundamentals of engineering: CAD, Manufacturing, and Electronics. It teaches students these skills through a project-based learning technique, where at the end of each quarter, members would have worked on individual projects that show case each of these 3 design essentials.

  • Bruin Underwater Robotics

Bruin Underwater Robotics is a club at UCLA that works towards building an underwater rover at the end of each year. In this club, I’ve been a member of our dive-ops sub-team, where I have helped design and create different mechanisms for the rover to complete tasks it is required to complete. This page showcases some of these designs.

    (September 2021 - June 2023)

  • Bionic Hand

During my second year at UCLA, I worked on building a bionic hand within the span of 9 weeks. Here, I devleoped my skills in arduino programming, and learnt more about different types of sensors. I also applied many rapid prototyping techniques.
